There does not seem to be a need for it, the crusaders had few bowmen so horse-archers could ride past them at short range and shoot - with a chance to penetrate mail, which a long range shot is unlikely to do. Druzhina Seljuk Illustrations of Costume & Soldiers

The depiction of Seljuk Turks in this documentary is very inaccurate. They are portrayed similar to Arabic light horsemen, but they were in fact steppe warriors who looked identically the same with other nomadic Turkic peoples living in the Eurasian steppes.

i think this is the cause of a mistranslation from arabic. i've got the translation of an arab archery manual recently, and apparently corssbows are refered to as "foot-bows" in arabic. so maybe this is what led to this idea. bows would definitely not be used in this way.

I see. Well crossbows were used in medieval Middle East and Seljuk horsemen also used dart-throwers or light crossbows.
