I always thought those rock drawings were made by the Yenisei Kyrgyz.

which is more likely. the idea that it might be avar is from the time back when the avar/rouran migration theory was still very popular amongst western scholars.

I always thought those rock drawings were made by the Yenisei Kyrgyz. David Nicole (referencing Khudyakov) in Attila and the Nomad Hordes says Kirghiz, 11th-12th century. I have also seen dates of 6th-7th century. I found a book by a Khudyakov on Google Books, in Russian, but with no preview. Are there any papers, books etc available on the net on this? Indeed. And the region did not have any significant Rouran settlement at that time.
