Modern Turkish folklore has many monsters and supernatural creatures originating from a mixture of Islamic, Turkic and local Anatolian myths. One particular monster common among many Turkic peoples is the Alkarısı or Albastı, a red female evil spirit that tries to steal new-born babies from their mothers. In fact, the Turkic goddess Umay, protector of women and children, probably was her archenemy though we have no known texts or stories/myths that talk about the existence of both at the same time at the same place.
In the 13th-14th century Uyghur version of the legend of Oghuz Qaghan, the main hero kills a forest monster named Qïyandqat (alternative spelling Kıyandkat). In the manuscript stored in Paris, a drawing of the monster is visible; it is drawn like a mixture of a rhinocerus and a big deer, with a horn and with deer feet but no antlers.
