Angus McBride recostructed that guy as wearing chain mail armor but the armor pieces depicted on the vessel are too big for chain so they look more like scale piece. Here is McBride's reconstruction:

on the other hand, the armour clearly looks like rings, not like 'fish' scale. maybe the scupltor wasn't able to produce smaller rings.

Well it could be "ring" armour (ie flat larger rings sewn on a shirt), but mail is just much more likely. (and yeah, it could be that making the rings smaller in the engraving wouldn't have worked.)

Roman Armour as your principle, why not try having one or two items of gladiatorial Armour, and developing from there?The primary Armour would be a bit more challenging. But again, look at the Armour used by gladiators,and use that as the base
