Hanshu 漢書 (94A: 3751; Zhonghua Shuju 中華書局 Edition) gives the meaning of the Hunnic title Chanyu 單于 as this: "單于者,廣大之貌也,言其象天單于然也. ([The word] Chanyu shows vastness/immensity, this means that the Chanyu was like the sky)".

According to Hanshu, the Huns called their rulers Chengli Gutu Chanyu 撐犁孤塗單于; Chengli ment "Sky" (Old Turkic Täŋri or Tengri), Gutu ment "son". Some historians have doubted this "Son of Heaven" meaning of Chengli Gutu so they claimed that it was Old Turkic Tengrikut (Täŋriqut).

According to De Groot's translation the Chinese gloss was "broad and great". I remember reading some book by a Russian author (unfortunately I don't remember name and title) where an etymology of the word "Khan" was proposed based on some Mongolian root with the meaning of "broad, wide" (from the name of some natural spirits in Altaic mythology called khata or something). According to the author "Khan Tengri" thus would have meant originally "the broad sky", i.e. the sky that covers everything and so metaphorically - the ruler that "covers" (rules) the land. If this is correct it may be related to the title "Shanyu" too.
There was another proposition too - from Turkic san - "rang" and öi - "house", thus meaning "lord (dignitary) of the house (dynasty)".
--------------------- BTW there is some very annoying link on this site that automatically send you to another page every minute or so. I don't know if it is only me, but this makes it almost impossible to post here.
